Writing a pledge and manifesto signals good intentions and purposes, and we strongly encourage that companies think about their general "raison d'être". Beyond the pledges and good intentions, however, each company must live up to the expectations it sets in its everyday practices – that’s what separates the wheat from the chaff. Legally binding policies are what really guide a company's practice, so a privacy brand, we ask you to measure us by what's in our privacy policy. We take your human right to privacy more seriously than most. Here's why:
In a globalised digital world with many different jurisdictions, legislations are very difficult to harmonise. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights as proclaimed by the United Nations in 1948 is the closest thing we have to a global standard of conduct and ethics. We believe that the use of any technology should serve to foster these rights. In liberal Western societies, we have become so used to our human rights privileges that we tend to take some of them for granted. But the truth is that while we hold onto some of them dearly, such as the rights to freedom of speech and religion, society is falling short with others. What about article 12 – the right to privacy?
Article 12:
No one shall be subjected to arbitrary interference with his privacy, family, home or correspondence, nor to attacks upon his honour and reputation. Everyone has the right to the protection of the law against such interference or attacks.
The demand for privacy is not an empty claim, luxury, or vanity. It's a fundamental human right that all companies should uphold in an accountable manner. As a technology company based in the heart of Europe – Berlin – we believe that all technological innovation should support the principles of our fundamental human rights. In 2020, technology is so advanced that it has become possible to innovate without destroying user privacy. Not seizing these possibilities amounts to moral negligence.
AI is the upcoming tech trend that will change our lives in ways that we cannot even fully imagine – yet. Granted, this is marketing speech – but if we all agree that AI is here to stay, we can all at least agree that what we decide today has long-lasting influences on how we will live with AI in the future. At Xayn, we’re focusing on bringing great AI and full privacy together. As AI tech needs lots of data input for training, any AI problem is also a big data problem. The highest quality data usually stems from real peoples' personal information, creating one of the most difficult problems in AI: what we call the AI Privacy dilemma.
We build technical solutions (like our work with blockchain) to solve this dilemma, and our pledge is simply our legally binding privacy policy. We recommend you measure us, and all your other favourite digital service providers, by our privacy policy.
